Beavers Gardener Badge
Beavers started work on their gardeners badge last week. They decorated pots to plant their summer flower seeds in.
They took their filled pots home to look after and record the changes they see as the flowers grow. Hopefully we will see some lovely blooms.
They also created a wildlife garden in tyre planters with plants that attract wildlife, like lavender, thyme and phlox. Each beaver drew a bug to decorate the wildlife garden sign 🐞🐝
Group Camp
Hi, heres the kitlist for the upcoming camp!
kitlist
Tonight our beaver scouts were walking around Ballymoney leaving their painted rocks in various places for people to find. Their hope is to make someone smile when they find them. Our hope is to make more people aware of scouting in Ballymoney. Keep an eye to see if anyone puts pictures of their finds under this post. Here are the rocks to look out for.
Tonight beavers did some show and tell of items they have collected for their collectors badge. As it was a lovely evening we moved the meeting outdoors. There were a wide variety of items on show.
Football cards
Rocks
Beach finds (rocks, driftwood, shells)
Bottle tops
Shells
Trains
Beanie Boos
Keyrings
DVDs
Complete set of Lego cards
Toy horses
The beavers all did very well talking about their collections and answering questions from their peers. Well done everyone!!
Scouts attended the annual county patrol camp over the bank holiday weekend. The weather was fantastic, not a drop of rain! The scouts worked well together pitching their tents on Friday night. On Saturday morning, after cooked breakfast provided by chefs Daniel, Adam, Megan and Ella, it was time to take part in a number of scouting activities.
The activities included backwoods cooking, orienteering, knife, axe and saw, fire lighting and sharing youth shape ideas.
After dinner (bolognese/savoury mince) most of the scouts prepared entertainment for the campfire.
The next morning after packing up, 5 scouts were awarded their Chief Scout Gold award and the close of camp. Well done Laura, Alex, Matthew, Nathan and Robyn.
Finally a get well soon wish to Kurt who had to leave camp a day early as he was unwell.
Thanks to Colin and the team for organising the event
On Tuesday night the Beavers took part in Pets at Home’s ‘animal friends’ workshop. The children had the opportunity to stroke or hold a hamster, guinea pig and rabbit. Karen from the store told them about the food the animals liked to eat. After the handling session they had the chance to ask any questions and to talk about what pets they owned themselves.
After the session the beavers took a walk around the store to look at the fish and other animals instore. Well done to the beavers for behaving so well.
A great turnout on Sunday to both celebrate the patron saint of Scouting and to help Castlerock scout group celebrate their centenary year.
Many thanks to all the kids and parents who came and to the leaders for their support.
(Please feel free to send me any pics you have of the day – especially beavers and scouts, my phone died…Lol be prepared!)
Congratulations to Sarah and Roma on being awarded their wood badge.
Additional Pics! – thanks Jackie
Cubs building!
This weekend a group of scouts completed their exploration of the North Down Coastal Path and Bangor as part of their expedition challenge badge.
After a final briefing at the scout hall it was off to the train station.
They travelled to Belfast Central, then changed to the Bangor line and disembarked at Holywood. The weather was fine as they headed off along the coastal path to their first stop, five and a half miles away at Grey Point Fort.
After exploring the fort and surrounding area, it was time to head on to Crawfordsburn Scout centre, to set up camp and cook dinner.
After tea (ball games and card games) they decided to head to Crawfordsburn beach for some chill out time.
Day two and the rain came. After sausage baps and breaking camp, the rain faired and they continued along the coastal path to Bangor. They spent some time exploring Pickie park and the harbour before treating themselves to a Burger King lunch (topping up their £3 meal allowance to really spoil themselves). Well deserved!
Final journey by train from Bangor to Ballymoney.
Well done to all! Looking forward to reading the reports 😀
Out and About
Ballymoney scouts have been out of the hall for the past couple of weeks now that we have lighter evenings! Last week they were out in the community doing some litter picking around the trim trail in Ballymoney.
We also spent an evening on Portstewart strand, where some parents joined us for a walk through the dunes and some fun on the beach.
April Note
Beavers have had a very busy month, so here’s a quick recap. First we had three new leaders invested to the section! Welcome to Ash, Holly and Rowan.
This month we visited Ballymoney library for story telling, attended the Beavers county Fun day in Maghera (see other post) and enjoyed an Irish themed night for St Patrick’s Day. Thanks so much to Candice and Caitlin for the beautiful Irish dancing display. Beavers also made some Irish joke fortune tellers.
Last week scout Alex helped beavers to earn their space badge. They visited space stations carrying out various missions about planets and constellations, watched a video of astronaut Tim Peake playing space ping pong and finished off with some stargazing.
Finally, it was time for a fun night at Drumaheglis Marina. Beavers had a woodland walk gathering ‘eggs’ along the way (even the rain didn’t dampen their spirits). Then on to Ash’s Scavenger Hunt where they found treats galore!
PHEW!!! I think we all deserve a nice rest after such a busy month. Happy Easter everyone!!!

KIT NOTES
I cannot stress the importance of labelling / naming everything. Cubs will be in tents, they will pull their ruckackcontents out and mix it up. They will leave stuff lying around in the wrong places. Other cubs will have headtorches and other things that look the same…… sharpie markers and labels…. saves a lot of arguing.
DO NOT SEND PHONES OR GADGETS! They will be confiscated if seen and probably get broken if not. Phones add to homesickness and the home contact (Intouch system) will be in place. Other electronic gadgets will get broken, run out of batteries, mixed up etc… They will not need anything like this.
Did i mention labelling everything?

Beavers Christmas Camp
The Scouts went out on a chilly survival night and made their shelters for sleeping under.
Some of them practiced their knife skills while the rest had a go at using different types of cooking equipment. After boiling the water on the trangia’s they had their cupasoups/mugshots to warm them up.
Breakfast rations were given out before heading out to light the camp fire. Fire lit and spirits high as they sang camp fire songs.
Some time and laughs later they all went to bed and the leaders went into their hammocks.
After a long lie in until after 8 am 😮 it was time to light the camp fire and have breakfast.
After breakfast they had some free time to explore the woods and climb trees. Time for camp tidy up with some help from cookie the dog and dismantle the shelters.
Scouts then had to light a fire to cook a hobo’s lunch (mince beef, potato’s and carrot wrapped in foil).
The Scouts and myself would like to thank Catherine for letting us use her grounds. Also thanks Akela and Alphie (Explorer YL) for much appreciated help.
