20 Ballymoney Beavers visited Crawfordsburn Scout Centre today. They enjoyed a puppet show, a magician, an adventurous activity (grass sledging), followed some trails, completed a scavenger hunt, met emergency service workers AKA heroes (RNLI, PSNI, Paramedics), crawled and ran around an assault course, toasted marshmallows, enjoyed play areas and bouncy castles. Phew!! Goody bags sent home with crafts to enjoy in their own their own time. We also had a visit to the scout tuck/goody shop. Thanks to NI Beaver team 👏🏻👏🏻

Beavers, Bees and Butterflies

This week Beavers were learning about pollinators, bees and butterflies in particular. After learning what a pollinator is, they had a quiz about bees to learn some interesting facts.

Then they set about creating a mini wildflower meadow in some new planters out in the scout yard. They decorated bees and butterflies to bring some colour to the area while we wait for the wildflower seeds to grow.

Then they finished up with a bee themed team game. Collecting one pollen ball at a time from the yellow “flower” to bring back to their “hive” and then tag their next team member. It was a a close race with red, green and blue lodges all collecting 66 pollen balls and yellow lodge out in front with 82!!

Scouts yard tidy up

Scouts worked hard this week. They were removing weeds around the building and yard, dismantled rotten old planters, collected rubbish and painted the front fence. There were also some branches to saw up for firewood. Well done everyone and we hope you enjoyed your ice creams.

Beavers Visit Cornfield Project

This week Beavers met at the cornfield project, in Coleraine. The Cornfield Project is an amazing regeneration concept that has taken a previously abandoned and unloved area of land and turned it into a thriving nature zone with widespread environmental activity.

They answered some quick quiz questions and then set off to explore the area ticking off their spotter sheets and picking litter as they went.

Scouts Raft Regatta

Scouts spent some time building stick rafts this week. After a variety of styles of rafts were created, they walked to the trim trail to test them out. Once the scouts were in the river and lined up, the rafts were released. The winning raft was HMS Noah. Unfortunately the net we stretched across the river failed to catch all the rafts and it was up to a leader and YLs to run downstream to retrieve them 😂😂

Beavers Sports

A rainy Tuesday evening didn’t stop our Beavers from completing their sports badge. Over our past few meetings we’ve had sports day games, netball and badminton tasters, and this week was football skills. Well done Beavers 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Scouts Exploration

After a couple of planning sessions our eldest Scouts, and some Explorers who previously missed out due to covid, completed their exploration of the North Down Coastal path. Travelling by train to Holywood, then hiking the rest of the way to Crawfordsburn Scout Centre (leaders shadowing and checkpoints) for an overnight stay, before continuing on foot to Bangor the next day. They had Crawfordsburn all to themselves so made good use of the lid…playing badminton, rounders and cooking sheltered from the rain. Saturday evening we were entertained by lots of singing and dancing scouts/explorers on the stage. Well done everyone 🤩🤩

Thanks to Dave (Crawfordburn scout centre warden) for opening the country park gates to allow us to visit Tesco.
